How can I settle a very old debt when I don’t know what collection agency holds it?

About 13 years ago I incurred a debt with a university. I need to take care of it so they’ll release my transcriptions. The only information they have about the debt is the amount and the agency who originally held the debt. This agency is now defunct. What do I do if it’s no longer on my credit report?

I plan on paying these debts soon but I just didn’t want the collectors to know I am in the military.

Can a debt that has been charged off 8 years ago continue to be sold and put on your credit report?

In other words, you don’t pay a credit card debt. It goes into collections, then it is charged off and reported on your credit by original creditor. Then over next 8 years it gets sold to multiple collection agencies. Can they continue to report it as bad debt especially since the statue of limitations has expired? What can you do to stop it?

I have a $7,000 debt sitting on my credit report since 2003. It says it will come off in 2010. What does that mean? It hasn’t been updated by the collector since 2003 and I haven’t received notices about paying it since then. What happens after 2010 if I don’t pay it? Does it come off my record for good so I don’t ever have to pay it? Please help!

I disputed some items through Experian and Equifax. Does simply disputing the debt re-start the 7 year count down?

Thanks.

What does it really mean when a creditor writes off a debt?

lola asked:

When a creditor listed on your credit report list a bad debt as being written off by the bank does it mean the obvious? Is that debt being written off as a loss to the bank? Please answer only if you work, or have knowledge in this field, or if this has happened to you. No guesses please.

I have no credit card debt and an an excellent credit report. I am going to do a small remodel on my rental property and plan to use my Home Depot card with no interest no payment for 12 months. I plan to use a few other cards as well. I thought that 30% is the best to load on to each card to maintain my credit score. Am I correct?

What will reset the statute of limitations for debt in Colorado?

Can’t seem to find any Colorado laws detailing what would constitute resetting the SOL on debt collections in the state of Colorado? G/F has some items on her credit report showing 4 years old when the Colorado SOL is 3 years. However, she made some payments on the debt within the past year. I’m wondering if Colorado considers making a payment to be resetting the SOL on that debt, or if the original date would be valid for SOL purposes regardless of her making some payments?
